A capital with a population of 800,000, Colombo is a patchwork of ancient areas and ultramodern districts. Its sea front makes it a pleasant and airy town, especially the Galle Face Green, a large park a mile long, perfect for strolling through and covered with small eating places in the evening. What is called 'the Fort' is actually the business district. Outside the fort, the bustling Pettah neighbourhood is more traditional with its large mosque, its market and Hindu temples. Further away lies the lovely residential area the English named Cinnamon Gardens, today known as Vihara Maha Devi Park.
