The Sri Lankan national dish is rice and (very spicy) curry: many small dishes, which are delicious and again, spicy, are served with sambol (grated coconut and pimento), chutneys (spiced fruit jams) and papadams (plain flat cakes). These dishes are served with good fish and seafood. Other varieties: biriyani, rice mixed with mutton or chicken. Delicious tropical fruits: pineapples, bananas, coconuts, papayas, guavas, rambutans, passion fruits...Tea is of course the most common drink. It is very strong and sweet, and without milk. But beware, the best tea leaves are reserved for export and hotels generally serve poor quality beverages. The local beer, in large bottles, is excellent. The best restaurant in Colombo serving fish and seafood is the famous Beach Wadiya on Railways Avenue.
