Galle, a large town with a population of 76,000, was formerly the biggest port on the island and the main hub in the spice trade. The ancient city, surrounded by ramparts dating back to Dutch occupation, exudes a colonial charm and gives off a delicious feeling of nostalgia with its 'ghost town' appearance. You can admire ancient homes and the Groote Kerk, a church dating back to 1754. the New Oriental hotel is a genuine historical monument with the stature of a museum. Lacemakers still sell their work on the ramparts, thus preserving a tradition inherited from the Portuguese.
