The site of Sigiriya is one of the most captivating on the island: an immense rock, on the summit of which the parricidal king, Kassapa, built his palace in which he reigned for 18 years. You can still admire 'the Damsels', frescoes painted on the rock, mid-way up the mountain. These 5th century paintings depict women loaded with flowers and wearing lots of jewellery.
