The western coast of Sri Lanka Colombo and Galle are two of Sri Lanka's better-known tourist spots © Martin Pettersson
The tourist west coast, lying between Colombo and Galle, is home to traditional villages and seaside resorts. Hikkaduwa is swamped by hotels, restaurants and shops, whereas its beaches are slowly being eaten up by erosion. Visit the Ahungalla region, or better still, the south coast beyond Galle, wilder and better conserved. If you stay in Colombo, settle at Mount Lavinia, the closest beach to the capital, offering pleasure and excitement. Nonetheless, the numerous beaches north of Colombo do not lack charm: Negombo, Waikkal, Seeduwa, Uswetakeiyawa and Marawila. South of the capital, the beaches of Wadduwa, Kalutara and Beuwela offer fantastic beaches for swimmers.
