Suriname is a small but culturally rich country. Its population is an assortment of descendants of black African slaves, creoles, Chinese, Hindustani (Indo-Pakistani population) and Amerindians. Its cultural mix is strongly felt in Suriname cuisine and Paramaribo music festivals. The black village of Santigron on the banks of the Saracama River is a small traditional hamlet. The Powaka village, which is 56 miles from Paramaribo, has primitive huts and is worth visiting.
