Paramaribo

The capital Paramaribo has the biggest port in the country. The town is located on the Suriname River, 7 and a half miles from the ocean. There are remains of important colonial buildings like the Governor's Residence (the current presidential palace). Fort Zeelandia shelters the Suriname museum and a few wooden beautiful buildings, former residences of army officials. The all wood-constructed Roman-styled Saint-Peter-and-Paul cathedral (1885) is superb. There are monuments representing its multiple ethnic groups and cultures such as the Hindu temples in Konongstraat and Gravenstraat, the biggest mosque in Latin America in Keizerstraat and synagogues a few streets from here. Palmentuin Park with its elegant shaded alleys is ideal to retire from the sun and the town market with the colours of the tropical fruits and the passionate street vendors is worth visiting.
