Alep

Aleppo, that claims the title of oldest city in the world, still bears traces of the Turkish occupation. Its covered souks, spotted with superb caravanserais (buildings erected around a compound to store goods and house travellers), and its wooden Ottoman homes, are reminiscent of the Istanbul of the last century. You will need at least a whole day to wander along the tiny alleys of the souks, admiring the decor and taking in the local colours and fragrances. In addition to the archaeological museum, take a look at the impressive citadel, a masterpiece of military architecture. The superbly decorated hall of the Throne, the El Nasri hammam and the Armenian neighbourhood, peaceful and old-fashioned, are worth a stopover.
