Archeological sites along the coast

The Mediterranean coast extends roughly 110 miles. With the lack of beaches, you can only swim in the north of Latakia, on the Ras-ibn-Hani peninsula or in the picturesque fishermen's village of Ras-al-Bassit. The Romans set up their port at Latakia. As for the crusaders, they chose Tartous. The Frank fortresses still stand erect in the area: the Krak des Chevaliers, the Marqab and the Saone castle. Budding archaeologists should not fail to visit the Ugarit site, where relics of the Bronze Age lie alongside those of the Hittite Empire, and of the Persian and Roman eras, the period in which traces of the first alphabet were discovered.
