Mountains, valleys and deserts.

Mountains, valleys and deserts. Ghab Valley, Syria Although desert covers almost half of Syria, the landscapes between the coasts and the mountains are very diverse. © René Mattes

Syria is straddled by mountains (to the south and north-west), steppes (to the east and north-east), valleys (in the centre) and plains (along the coast). Although the desert covers 48% of the national territory, with a few luxuriant oases like Palmyra and Sakhne, the landscape is of an infinite diversity. There are basalt rocks in the Hauran and the Druze Djebel, wheat or barley fields in the fertile crescent, snow-capped peaks in the Ansarije Djebel and verdant shores along the Euphrates against a backdrop of sand.
