The Syrian hills Thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean, the back-country consists of countless hills planted with orchards. © Bertrand Machet
Syria's plantlife is also diversified with steppic plants on the plateaus, Mediterranean flora along the coast and occasionally alpine flora on the mountains; 3,500 different species thrive here. Oak, eucalyptus, tamarind, chestnut, pine and the Aleppo cypress grow further to the north of Latakia. Olive, fig, orange, pistachio, almond, apricot and pomegranate trees will seduce your senses. However, date palms are increasingly scarce as the winter is too harsh for their growth. Cotton, chickpea plantations and vineyards also help form the Syrian landscape.
