Souvenirs and handcraft Syria

Fabric-making is an old tradition in Syria. In the souk of Damascus, you will find gold or silver-embroidered brocades. In Halap, you will get bright-coloured silk headscarfs. You can also buy olive oil or bay soap bars, the ancient version of our household soap. Damascus is especially known for its marquetry, but plastic objects often replace mother-of-pearl or camel-bone inlays!
Carpets in souks are not made locally, but imported from Iran, Turkey, or even Caucasus. They are quite expensive.
Shops open from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. In summer, they stay open until 7:00 or 8:00 pm.
