Just over a mile long, surrounded by pastoral wheat fields, the Apamea 'cardo' is close to being more spectacular than that of Palmyra. Especially when you learn that the pillars were raised one by one. The blocks of stone lying on the ground are an eloquent testimony to the past glory of the ancient city dating back to the 2nd century BC. Make a stop at the museum set up in an ancient caravanserai (with its lovely mosaics).
