To better appreciate the fabulous heritage of over thirty of the civilisations that shaped the country, do not forget to stopover at the national museum in Damascus. Do not miss out on Ugarit that houses the oldest alphabet on the planet, from the 15th century BC. On the site of this old city, thousands of tablets were found, including the frescos of the synagogue of Dura-Europos, a fortified Greco-Roman town built in the Euphrates valley.
