Puppet shows

Puppet shows The art of tea For the Taiwanese people, tea is more than just a drink - it is an art form in itself, with a specific ritual surrounding it. © I. LUBINETSKY

Taiwanese puppet arts are amongst the most sophisticated on the planet, a blend of traditional costumes, dexterity of body language and refinement of language. The puppeteer must therefore be versatile and multi-talented: of course, he may manipulate the puppets with great skill, but this is only the tip of the iceberg! He sculpts the puppets on camphor tree wood, embroiders silk for the costumes, writes the stories and plays the music; so in short, an all-round artist! Nothing is left to chance: each of the costumes, the colours, the shapes has a specific meaning that helps to identify a character at first sight. The puppeteer stands behind a small puppet theatre and manipulates his puppets without looking at what he is doing. You can learn about the complexity of the exercise at the enchanting puppet museum at Di Hua street. Try to manipulate a puppet and you will understand that giving life to these lovely small characters is an extremely complex art! And yet these puppets are handled with great panache by the puppet masters!
