Generally known as the "Little New Year", the Lanterns Festival takes place yearly as from the 15th day of the first lunar month, which is usually the end of February or early March depending on the year. Every evening for a fortnight, Taiwanese families march in procession holding lanterns of different shapes and sizes, designed from the zodiacal sign of the year. A thrilling and unmissable show, especially in the temples. You should treat yourself to a particularly exciting view of the processions from the summit of the Democracy Memorial (ex Chiang Kai-Shek memorial) at Taipei.
