The north coast

Tourism develops at a brisk pace on this Pacific coast a few miles away from Taipei. A superb panoramic road borders the coast, protected over 44 miles from Tansui to the port city of Keelung, through a spectacular countryside of beaches and stunning rock formations. At Yeliu, erosion has wrought the coral to amazing human shapes, including the famous Queen's head, whose side view from a particular angle undoubtedly brings to mind images of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti ! Further eastwards, a trip to Jiufen is unmissable: perched on a hill slope, the Little Shanghai exudes an awesome charm with its narrow streets and stone stairs, flanked by red traditional lanterns, refined tea houses and small traditional restaurants. Another tour offering panoramic views extends along the north-east coast over 41 miles from Rueifang to Tousheng. At Fulung, the white sand beaches are as charming as those in the south of the island.
