Pemba island Pemba island is part of the Zanzibar archipilego. Less of a tourist trap, it is more authentic and rural. Gerald Nowak / age fotostock
Pemba, the archipelago's second largest island, is 31 miles from Zanzibar. Much more mountainous, it is essentially made up of rocks. Marshes and mangroves take up a large area. The population, around 300,000, is much poorer than that of the neighbouring island, and the main activities are fishing and farming. The majority of the tanzanian production of cloves comes from this island.
