Overview

Tanzania

Here in East Africa, along the Indian Ocean, Tanzania is a world rich with myths and legends. The setting for the famous film "Out of Africa", this country has at least 120 tribes, including the well-known Masaï. In addition to its varied culture, Tanzania is full of fauna and flora as well as the famous Mount Kilimandjaro peaking at 19,340 ft and Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world. Tanzania is one of the most amazing, most romantic and most hospitable countries in all of Africa. However, the regions of Kigoma and Kagera are terrorist-prone and remain highly inadvisable for travel.

pros

  •  All the wildlife in the superb natural sites.
  •  A trip along the seaside areas in Zanzibar.

cons

  •  Back-breaking trails.
  •  High touring charges.

Country Guide

Our Editorial team's advice

Visit Tanzania in September-October. You will certainly see all of the animals quenching their thirst around the watering holes. Visit the islands from December to March when scorching heat is guaranteed. To see the two contrasting aspects of the country, go on safari and have a seaside stay in Zanzibar.
You could climb Mount Kilimandjaro in five or six days. You will not be alone as close to 12,000 people set out to conquer the highest peak in Africa. Over half succeed. It is imperative that you take along appropriate equipment: backpack, collapsible baton, stock of water and first-aid kit. For safaris, avoid bright coloured clothes which might agitate the animals. Do not forget to take enough camera film as there will be multiple snapshot opportunities during your journey. If you use up your stock, you will easily find them in the cities but they will be of a poor quality. Request permission from the locals before taking photos of them.
