The cheap local dish is ugali (cassava gruel or a sort of polenta) - always eaten with the right hand - served with meat and vegetable stew. Rice is also a staple food, though sometimes reserved for Sundays. In the north, enjoy the nyama choma (barbecue-grilled beef and chicken) served in large amounts. Along the coast, dishes are flavoured with cinnamon and clove-spiced banana or cassava. Tourists are treated to grilled coconut lobsters, squid and fish. Restaurants in lodges serve English cuisine. A living remnant of the colonial era! In the cities, there are excellent Indian restaurants serving birianis and pilaos, two types of perfumed rice.
