The Ngorongoro Crater

The protected area surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater was administratively separated from Serengeti Park in 1959. Now a listed World Heritage Site, this 3,200 miČ reserve gradually climbs from an altitude of 1,020 to 3,587m. Consisting of an enclosed area 12 mi in diameter marked out by the rim of the ancient volcano, this site, the only one of its kind in the world, is home to some 25,000 animals and a population of Maasai people. It demonstrates an incredible historic balance between man and nature! Having said that, the crater accounts for just a tiny part of the entire protected area, which up to over 2.5 million animals may call home at any given time depending on the season and the pattern of migration.
