Chiang Mai is renowned for the kindness of its people, its festivals and quiet neighbourhoods. Home to 121 temples, far older than those in Bangkok; the oldest, Wat Phra Singh, dates back to the 13th century and is adorned with splendid frescoes. Meanwhile, the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched on a mountain slope overlooks the city. The capital of spirituality and culinary arts, Chiang Mai is also a great place to pick up local handicrafts.
