Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

In the Andaman sea off the coast of Thailand, the Phi Phi islands lie between the island of Phuket and the mainland. The most touristy of these, Koh Phi Phi Don, is best known for its diving sites and its beautiful sandy beaches. The region was made famous by the movie "The Beach", released in 2000 and directed by Danny Boyle, starring Leonardo Dicaprio. The film was shot on the island of Phi Phi Lee.

If you don't feel like spending your day snoozing on a beach somewhere, grab your goggles and snorkel and have a look at what's going on below the surface; diving enthusiasts will find a very varied aquatic fauna and flora.

Forget about driving here, everyone gets around by boat, there are no roads here anyway! The island is accessible from various places: Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta, etc. Most of the boats are moored on the southern part of the island at Ao Ton Sai.

pros

Visit Koh Phi Phi

  • To see

The panorama of Koh Phi Phi, is well worth the tiring climb (900 ft of near vertical ascent).

    To do

Stroll into the village of Tonsaï where you can visit a monument to the memory of the countless victims of the 2006 tsunami. A trip to the island of Phi Phi Leh, the sister island of Phi Phi Don is also a worthy excursion.

    To think about

Go with an empty suitcase, otherwise you will be forced to buy an extra bag over there for all your new purchases! Oh, and don't forget your mosquito repellent, very important.
  • To avoid

There's a good reason why Thailand is nicknamed the 'land of smiles' so don't hesitate to join in - smile! Don't buy counterfeit goods, you'll only get yourself into trouble with customs. Also, avoid visiting during the monsoon - never pleasant for your holiday!

    To try

Thai food is very tasty but be know your limits with spices so enjoy those spicy peppers in moderation! The choice is varied; from green curry to noodles, from sauteed vegetables to fried rice and soups there is something to satisfy all palates. Don't forget to taste a real pad thai and somtom (green papaya salad).

    To bring back

In Thailand, it is difficult to resist the temptation to shop; from clothing to Biddha statues, or incense and cushion covers, here you will find the souvenir to suit you.

    Thailand's New Year Water Festival

Songkran, or the New Water Festival, as it is also know, is the most important of all Thai festivals and holidays. It marks the beginning of a new astrological year and is much in keeping with the old lunar calendar of Siam. It is officially celebrated this year on April 12, but the festival actually takes place over a period of four days. This year the festival will kick-off on 13 April. The centre
