Krabi, Thailand

On the southern coast of Thailand, facing the Andaman Sea, the Krabi province includes over 150 islands. This is a place of beautiful landscapes that result from huge karst formations, found all along the coastline and that offer incredible views. As far as the seaside is concerned, Krabi's coastline is simply out of this world: fine sand, crystal-clear water and perfect temperatures. The beaches here are certainly amongst the most beautiful in the country - some of these can only be reached by boat, a fact that makes them all the more charming. The lush vegetation is also an advantage to this little corner of paradise. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, for example, is home to an extremely rich fauna and flora, as well as some impressive waterfalls. As for Than Bokkhorani National Park, its limestone mountains offer a stark contrast with the islands and their mangrove forests. Finally, Krabi is the ideal departure point for visiting the numerous neighbouring islands, such as Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta. Krabi airport is only 12 miles from the coast, while it is two hours by car to get to Phuket airport.

pros

  •  Beautiful beaches
  •  The well preserved landscapes

cons

  •  The distance from Phuket airport.

Visit Krabi

  • To see

The various national parks in the region, such as Than Bokkhorani or Khao Phanom Bencha are the places to go. The latter is some 13 miles to the north of Krabi. Beautiful tropical forest and hidden waterfalls await you in this jungle paradise.

    To do

The landscapes of Krabi are perfect for rock climbing, a sport enjoyed by many in these parts. Also be sure to take a stroll through Krabi's daily market to get a feel for local life.

    To think about

Go with an empty suitcase, otherwise you will be forced to buy an extra bag over there for all your new purchases! Oh, and don't forget your mosquito repellent, very important.
  • To avoid

There's a good reason why Thailand is nicknamed the 'land of smiles' so don't hesitate to join in - smile! Don't buy counterfeit goods, you'll only get yourself into trouble with customs. Also, avoid visiting during the monsoon - never pleasant for your holiday!

    To try

Thai cuisine, with its expert combination of flavours and aromas, is a real treat for the palate. The choice is varied; from green curry to noodles, from sauteed vegetables to fried rice and soups there is something to satisfy all palates. Don't forget to taste a real pad thai and somtom (green papaya salad).

    To bring back

In Thailand, it is difficult to resist the temptation to shop; from clothing to Biddha statues, or incense and cushion covers, here you will find the souvenir to suit you.

    Thailand's New Year Water Festival

Songkran, or the New Water Festival, as it is also know, is the most important of all Thai festivals and holidays. It marks the beginning of a new astrological year and is much in keeping with the old lunar calendar of Siam. It is officially celebrated this year on April 12, but the festival actually takes place over a period of four days. This year the festival will kick-off on 13 April. The centre
