The capital Bangkok must appear on your itinerary somewhere, even if for a couple of days. You may be overwhelmed if you are a first time visitor; polluted but energetic and exuberant, Bangkok is a world away from the tranquility of its ancient Buddhist temples. To appreciate the city, head away from the main tourist drag. Chiang Mai, the country's second largest city is also worth a stopover. With a more 'human' face than Bangkok, it is also home to numerous temples as well as being the country's major handicraft centre.
