The north of the Netherlands is characterised by the province of Friesland, a territory of farmland and lakes which lives somewhat apart, with its own language, identity and traditions. The dunes, which stretch for 140 miles, protect the population from erosion by the sea. The rhythm of life in Friesland seems completely out of time with the rest of the Netherlands.
