1406: the House of Burgundy receives the Duchy of Brabant and unites the country.
1548:Charles V creates the Low Countries (north and south) consisting of 17 provinces.
1815: the Congress of Vienna unites the provinces of the north and south and forms the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
1830: Belgium, then a southern province, claims its independence.
1839: the turn of Luxembourg.
1917: universal suffrage is established, as well as women's eligibility.
1919, women obtain the right to vote.
1940: Germany occupies the country.
From 1941 to 1943: general strikes are organized against anti-Jewish persecution.
1945: Germany capitulated and the royal family comes home to the Netherlands.
1948: Juliana is inaugurated Queen.
1949: the Netherlands grant their independence to Indonesia.
1957: the Netherlands enter the EEC.
1962: it is Netherlands New Guinea's turn to become independent.
1975: Suriname also becomes independent from the Netherlands.
1980: Juliana's daughter, Beatrix, succeeds her to the throne.
1998: Wim Kok and the Social Democrats are elected to Parliament.
July 2002: Jan Peter Balkenende becomes Prime Minister.
