Zeeland Much of Zeeland is made up of former islands that gradually joined together. The land reclaimed from the sea remains at an altitude below sea level. A.Lorgnier ©
The province of Zeelandt, in the south of the Netherlands has won the fight against the sea, which is now held back by the impressive works on the Noord-Brabant delta - a double line of dikes. Flatter than flat, this part of the country lives 20 ft below sea level. The Biesbosch Nature Park stretches over 29,650 acres, 11,850 of which is a nature reserve which was created after the tidal wave on Saint Elizabeth in 1421. It shelters numerous bird species and a great variety of flowers.
