From the papal city, via the Vatican corridor known as "passeto" (little corridor in Italian), you can access Sant'Angelo castle via the Borgo quarter. This massive fortress, originally the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, is dominated by a statue of the Archangel Michael. Visit the various rooms that were built for the protection of the Pope in case of invasion. Note particularly the Pauline room with its frescoes creating optical and special illusions, the Apollo room with its frescoes of mythological scenes and, from the terrace, appreciate the panoramic view over the Tiber and the city. Near the castle, between the Vatican and the Tiber, discover the Holy Spirit Hospital, the oldest in Rome (13th century).
