St. Peter's Basilica Despite its age (almost four hundred years old), the basilica remains one of the most significant monuments in the Catholic faith. Ralph Braumer / age fotostock;
On entering the basilica, look at Filarete Gate. Within the sanctuary, you will see an interior covered in marble enclosing 11 chapels and 45 altars. Look at the bronze canopy, held up by four 65 ft high columns, built by Bernin in the 17th century and housing the marble papal altar. St Peter's tomb is below, in the crypt. Behind is the internal cupola, over 442 ft high, containing the Michelangelo fresco. From the summit of the cupola you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view over St Peter's square and the city.
