Airports
There are two International Airports near Rome. Leonardo da Vinci International Airport at Fiumicino is less than 19 miles south-west of the city. The capital and Termini station can be reached by train, either from Fiumicino station (£8 and 40 minutes), or from Fara Sabina station (£5 and 1 hour). By taxi, the fare is approximately 40 euros (£30). Ciampino airport, 9 miles south-east of Rome, is mainly used by chartered flights. To get to Rome, take a bus that is heading to Anaginina metro station for 4 euros (£3), then take the metro (1.5 euros (£1) per ticket). The journey to Termini station takes 75 minutes. In a taxi, allow 30 Euros (£24) for the trip.

Security
Like all major cities, Rome has some problems with crime, but is still a fairly safe city. Beware of pickpockets, especially in the major tourism spots. Groups of young children are experts, with schemes to distract tourists and then pickpocket them. Keep an eye on your luggage and handbags. Be careful about thefts carried out on scooters. Keep your camera in an ordinary bag. In the hotel, avoid leaving passports and money visible. Use the hotel's safe.

Languages
Italian is the official language.

Requirements
European Union citizens do not need visas for a stay of less than three months. Bring an identity card or a valid passport.

Religion
The city state of the Vatican is the world centre of Catholicism.

Currency
The currency is the euro. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, shops and car hire agencies, and you can withdraw cash from cash machines. Travellers cheques issued in pounds are usually accepted (although a commission is also charged in banks). Banks are open from 8:30am to 1:30pm and 3:00pm to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, whilst foreign exchange offices often have longer opening hours.

Local transportation
To get to the Vatican City, take the number 64 bus from Termini (Rome's main station) and go to Piazza Venezia. Generally, when moving about the city, avoid taxis, which are expensive (and only take official yellow or white taxis). Instead use public transport (bus, tram and metro). The Vatican can be visited on foot. A Vatican bus service links Piazza San Pietro (St Peter's square) with the new enterance to the Vatican Museums. The bus leaves every 30 minutes, from 8:45 am to 12:45 pm in front of the Ufficio Informazioni Pellegrini e Turisti in St Peter's square. The service is available from Feburary to December.

Health
No particular vaccine required. No problems with the water.

Electricity
220 V for the most part. Still, bring a small adapter, because some plugs have a smaller hole than others.
