Like beaches, Togo's assets do not lie in game reserves. The only two reserves (Fazao and Keran) have suffered heavily from poaching. They are presently closed for redevelopment. In the heart of the north, at Dapong, the big game of the "Lion's den" forest have been decimated. Today, nature is merely populated by birds, antilopes, warthogs or monkeys, and there is a very slim chance of coming across a lion or an elephant. You can content yourself, nonetheless, by going to watch the crocodiles and hippopotami of the Mono River. At the hippopotami pond in the vicinity of Atakpame, you can admire the animals as they emerge from the water early or late in the day.
