Focus: Across the Channel: beachside France

3 - Antibes

Across the Channel: beachside France

Almost always associated to neighbouring Juan-les-Pins, Antibes is rarely allowed to shine in its own right. A breeze of jazz has been winding its way around this part of the coast, giving the small town its distinct flavour. The chic reputation of Antibes began making its way round in the nineteenth century with the Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival attracting some of France's top high-society figures. Hosting some of jazz's biggest names, the festival gives a show to remember every year. The region gives its guests a great show sound-wise, but also visually. The 25 kilometres of preserved coastline that lines Antibes are reason enough to be mesmerised. Its jagged cliffs dotted with secret coves and stretches of golden sandy beach are just as Picasso portrays them in his paintings (Now at the Museum of the Grimaldi Châteaux). Gravette, Ponteil, Salis and Ondes are just some of the most popular fine sandy beaches, which fuse with pebble beaches that stretch to Villeneuve Loubet. Colours, music and beautiful scenery - the senses are sure to have a field day here in this little corner of the French south! Everything stops when the nightlife comes to an end in Juan-les-Pins, which makes for a welcome break from the crowds, leaving holidaymakers to make the most of the beaches, which are also beautiful in the evenings.
