Across the Channel: beachside France

Put on the map in 2006 with the arrival of a high-profile swimming coach who worked with the local swimming team, Canet-en-Roussillon knew exactly how to work this to its advantage to increase its popularity. The tram line linking it to Perpignan made it a lot more accessible too, hence its status as a family destination. With its nine kilometers of relatively calm coastline, the area is ideal for families with young children. Parents appreciate the village's picturesque aspect with its winding streets, Saint Jack Church (at least as old as 1241) and its castle. There is also the aquarium with 54 pools where you can explore the marine fauna and flora of the five continents. Another popular attraction is the Lake of Canet, which provides a habitat for over 240 animal species and 200 varieties of migratory birds. For a spot of sunbathing and a bit of a splash around, the eight fine sandy beaches await. Try Mar Estang, the beach of the Sud, the beach of the grand Large, Central beach, Rousillon and Sardinal.
