The Canary Islands more your thing? P&O has a 12 night cruise to this popular Spanish destination, as well as stops in Portugal on the way there and back. On board the Azura, you'll depart from Southampton and sail to Madeira, the lush island in the Portuguese archipelago which also includes Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagem. Madeira is famous for its wine, embroidery handicrafts and beautiful landscapes awash with exotic flowers and plants. From Madeira you'll cruise to Gran Canaria where you can split your time between the beautiful beaches and must-see nature reserves. On Tenerife, you'll find more beaches, but it is the rugged, volcanic landscape that is really impressive on this "island of eternal spring." The built-up resort areas of the island's south will ensure you will have plenty to keep you occupied and entertained. Your final port of call in the Canaries is La Palma, nicknamed "isla bonita" (beautiful island), where the port town of Santa Cruz de la Palma features well-preserved 17th and 18th century houses. On the cruise back to Southampton, you'll drop in to Lisbon so make a beeline for the Castelo de Sao Jorge to have the best views over the city. Wander along the tiny cobbled streets of Alfama before sampling a pasteis de nata, the local specialty.
