If you're pressed for time and only have a weekend to spare, don't despair, a cruise is still possible! Hop on board P&O's Oceana for a two night whistle-stop tour of Bruges, departing from Southampton. It may be a short break, but the journey there is half the fun. Upon arrival, head to the markt (market square) to get your bearings or simply pull up a chair at one of the many cafés here, order a local beer and watch the world go by. Take a romantic boat ride up and down the canals (this is the "Venice of the north" after all) so you can get a better look at the wonderful medieval architecture, much of which is still intact. You'll soon see why Bruges' historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pick up some souvenirs at one of the many chocolate boutiques (the diet ends here) or find a restaurant tucked away in the side streets for a delicious carbonade flamande. Work it all off with a visit to the 13th century belfry where, to reach the top of the 83 metre high bell tower you'll need to climb 366 steps however the views are worth it!
