Ok, it's corny, but it just has to go on the list! This classic St. Valentine's destination is, always has been and always will be the perfect setting for a romantic sojourn. But to try and be a tiny bit creative we have chosen just one area of the city that we feel will help ignite the flames of passion for that extra special weekend. Famous for, among others things, great painting movements, the Sacré Coeur and Amélie, Montmartre is situated high above the north of the city and has charm in bounds with its winding, cobbled streets, small, independent shops (no chains to be found here) and village-like feel. There is certainly enough to fill a weekend with in this relatively small part of Paris. Days could be spent discovering the streets of Montmartre and visiting the several art museums in the area, such as the Espace Montmartre-Dali or the Musée de Montmartre, which recounts the history of the area. There are numerous galleries to look around as well and a whole host of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants to savour. Place du Tertre, one of the main squares in the quarter, is a good option to sit and watch the world go by and to see artists at work, sketching portraits. You can also go celeb-spotting in either the Cimetière de Montmartre (Hector Berlioz, Edgar Degas, François Truffaut) or the Cimetière Saint-Vincent (Maurice Utrillo). Le Clos Montmartre is also worth a visit, being Paris' only vineyard, built in the 30s to stop housing developments. Let's not forget of course the famous Sacré Coeur which is magnificently illuminated at night. It would not be a true Montmartre experience if you didn't go to a cabaret in the evening, and there are plenty to choose from, including the famous Moulin Rouge, although some would say that it is surviving more on its reputation than on value for money. When the night is over, why not go back to your very own rented flat, many of which offer better views of Paris than the hotels in the area. What could be more romantic?
