In Sean Connery's fifth portrayal as Bond he heads to Japan where he is sent to look for the perpetrators of the hijacking of an American spacecraft which was in orbit. He first lands in Tokyo, one of the world's great metropolises and the country's capital city. Anyone who has already been to the country's capital city will know what a unique and thrilling place it is with its geisha districts, grand architecture (the Imperial Palace, the Metropolitan Government Building, Senso-ji Temple and the Asahi Beer Hall to cite but a few examples) and world class shopping. The contrast in Tokyo between new and old, modern and traditional is exemplified by another two of the city's must-see attractions: the brand new Tokyo Sky Tree, a broadcasting tower with restaurant and observation deck, and the Tsukiji fish market, the largest in the world and reputed for the quality of its sushi. The scene where Bond and Aki, the Japanese special agent, are on the cargo ship Ning-Po was filed in the port of Kobe, famous for its beef and sadly the earthquake which ravaged the city in 1995. A hillside city with magnificent sea views, it is not one of the top tourist destinations in the country although for a peek into the real Japan is certainly worth a go. But the most iconic image from the film is that of Himeji Castle (also known as White Heron Castle) whose exterior was used as Tanaka's ninja training camp. Nearly 700 years old, it dominates the hill on which it is built and of course provides for incredible views of its surroundings. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1993 it has survived a world war and several natural disasters. The best option for visiting the castle is as a day trip from a larger city close by such as Kobe or Osaka.
