Focus: For your eyes only: the best of Bond's travels

8 - Udaipur - Octopussy

For your eyes only: the best of Bond's travels

The thirteenth Bond film sees Roger Moore head off to India and the stunning Rajasthani city of Udaipur, also known as the White City for the colour of its buildings. Before reaching the town however, he finds time to stop off at Shah Jahan's Taj Mahal, which he built in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal. Despite it being 400 miles away and in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, James obviously thought it important to see and who can blame him! It is one of the most breathtaking pieces of world architecture and is worth making even the biggest of detours to experience. From there, Bond heads to Udaipur, where he uses as his base the magnificent Shiv Niwas Palace hotel. His goal though is to sneak into Octopussy's palace which was set in the world famous Lake Palace hotel, a floating palace in the middle of Lake Pichola. Even if you can't afford to stay there as a guest, it is worth forking out to dine there - you will probably never have such a wonderful backdrop to your meal! Also featuring in the film is the Monsoon Palace which serves as the palace of Kamal Khan. Located on a hilltop on the edge of Lake Pichola, it provides incredible views of the city and its waters. If you manage to get to Udaipur one thing that you must do is to go to one of several small hotels in the city where rooftop showing of Octopussy take place regularly. While you watch the action on the screen you can turn your head and see for real the sights and sounds being played out in front of you, a unique experience.
