3 - The Hazelton, Toronto

Our pick of the world's luxury hotels

The Hazelton (read the full review here) is a charmingly discreet yet satisfyingly luxurious hotel situated in the heart of Toronto's upscale neighbourhood, Yorkville, just north of the city centre. If you're looking for a touch of romance or a relaxing haven from which to explore the sights of the city, this is the place to come. One of the quieter districts, Yorkville will charm you from the moment you arrive with its quaint small-town feel. Add to that an ideal location with friendly staff and its own signature scent, and you are in holiday heaven.

The hotel as a whole has an extremely sophisticated, understated feel, interspersed with à la mode sculptures and other pieces. Passing through the lobby, you will arrive in the gratifyingly slick bar along with an outdoor terrace for the summer months, which is often frequented by stars, especially during the Tribeca International Film Festival (TIFF). As for the rest of the hotel, the style just keeps on coming, with a beautiful private screening room, spa, gym and indoor pool.

Spread across only three floors, the rooms at the Hazelton manage to maintain a cosy feel whilst being extremely spacious and accommodating, using a palette of rich purples and greys and lavish carpets that your feet will happily sink into. Not only this, but each of the 77 rooms comes equipped with the latest gadgets - an iPod docking station, large flat screen television and control panel for everthing from the curtains to the lighting, to give you the ultimate in relaxation. One of the more impressive details is the heated floors, providing added comfort during the cold Canadian winters.

The hotel's restaurant compliments its sophisticated feel, with subtle décor and wholesome food. There's a wide range of dishes to try for all three meals, including lots of fresh fish and local meat. Popular with the locals as well as guests at the hotel, it's advisable to book as far in advance as possible. Or if you don't fancy heading down to the restaurant, room service is provided around the clock.
