Focus: Show your autumn colours: leaf peeping at home and abroad

Show your autumn colours: leaf peeping at home and abroad

Canada's largest province (almost 600,000 square miles) and the only one where French is an official language, Québec is full of the joys of autumn and one of the finest places in the world to escape to and marvel at the colours of this most fiery of seasons. Not only do its forests burst into the most gorgeous reds, yellows and oranges, but it is also the time when the vines and orchards bear their fruit. The most famous of trees is the sugar maple, whose leaf is borne on Canada's flag, however also contributing to the symphony of colour are the leaves of the yellow birch and American beech. Some of the finest places to experience the autumn in Québec are along the St. Lawrence River, especially where the snow geese make a brief return before heading down to the States. Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area is also a good place to watch these birds, while the Laurentian Mountains is another spectacular place to witness autumn foliage. Of course should you have just a few days break in Québec, the urban parks of Québec City and Montreal are just as rewarding, each with their own unique charm. Also check out Via Rail's autumn packages, many of which go through Québec.
