Trust the Japanese to come up with the most ambitious of all urban beaches! The Seagaia Ocean Dome at Miyazaki in southern Japan is a huge manmade beach but is also the world's largest indoor water park. Featuring a retractable roof, the air temperature is kept at 30°C and the water temperature at 28°C so that it is neither too hot nor too cold. With a flame-spitting 'volcano', high-tech wave machinery (well, it is Japan), the Ocean Dome is 300m long and 100m wide. Add in a clear blue 'sky' (when the roof is closed), palm trees and fine white sand and you have the perfect fake beach. Every hour on the hour, the waves come crashing in for those on body boards, while fake parrots (yes, fake birds) trill from the artificial rainforest. The kids will adore the waterslides, the raft rides, while the adults can browse the boutiques or visit the beach bars. Later in the day, entertainment is provided by Caribbean carnival dancers and musicians, before a stage show and laser light spectacle at night. If that's not enough to keep you occupied, there are tennis courts, a golf course and even a zoo nearby. It doesn't come cheap though; this technologically advanced urban beach costs £19 for adult entry and £12 for children.
