Rising above the modern lower town, the Alhambra and the Albaycin, situated on two adjacent hills, form the medieval part of Granada. To the east of the Alhambra fortress and residence are the magnificent gardens of the Generalife, the former rural residence of the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The residential district of the Albaycin is a rich repository of Moorish vernacular architecture, into which the traditional Andalusian architecture blends harmoniously. It is situated in the autonomous region of Andalusia in the province of Granada. The Alhambra is situated in Granada, which is also the capital of the province. The city is located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and at the confluence of three rivers: Beiro, Darro and Genil. This means that the area is diverse in its landscape as well as in its attractions. Granada, in Spanish, means pomegranate, which is the heraldic (from heraldry, which is the study, profession, or art of creating and blazoning arms) device of Granada. Tourists flock from all over the world to visit the area's rich Islamic art, portrayed by the Alhambra for example. Granada is also famous for its numerous gardens, where it is common to find the locals either strolling around the gardens in their Sunday best, or young people playing music on a Saturday afternoon. Apart from the gardens and the complex of castles (where you will find the Alhambra), a must for the list of things to do is Sacromonte. This neighbourhood is located above Albaycin and has a unique twist. You will notice the numerous cave dwellings. Today many locals, including hippies, live in the caves as there is no rent to pay. You can also enjoy a wonderful view over Granada from Mirador San Miguel Alto. And have lunch in the very typical restaurant Casa Juanillo. There are a number of flamenco bars in this neighbourhood, so don't forget to bring your dancing shoes along!
