Top 10 half-term European world heritage sites

Bruges, or 'Brugge', as it is known in Flemish, is an outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, which has maintained its historic fabric as this has evolved over the centuries, and where original Gothic constructions form part of the town's identity. As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to different parts of the world. It is closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive painting. Bruges' inscription to the Unesco World Heritage List was in 2000. One for the world's most romantic cities, Bruges is definitely one for couples! Known as the Venice of the north due to its quaint canals lined by Willow trees and fields of flowers that are as beautiful in summer as they are in autumn, the best way of exploring the city is via boat. To get the full impact of the city, climb up the belfry and have a look at the view. There isn't a great deal to see and do in Bruges, but there's enough to keep you entertained for a long weekend if what you're after is a bit of rest and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A must-see is the 'Frites' (or chip, in English) museum, which always makes for an entertaining stroll and is great to wheat your appetite before indulging in Belgian's specialties, like 'moules-frites' (or mussels and chips in English) and of course, there's always the scrumptious Belgian chocolate! Whilst in Bruges though, you should try the local dish, 'carbonade flamande', which is a winter dish of stewed beef in beer gravy accompanied by chips.
