Transport 03/03/2010

British Airways has trained 1,000 volunteer cabin crew should industrial action that has threatened to temporarily cripple the airline, go ahead.

British Airways CEO Willie Walsh announced yesterday that the airline would enlist the services of 23 fully crewed charter aircraft in the event of a major strike.

An overwhelming majority of BA cabin crew voted in favour of the strike, brought about by disputes over work conditions such as reductions in crew numbers.

So far, no flights from London City airport will be affected, while details concerning Heathrow departures are yet to be confirmed.

Strike dates have not been announced however Unite is required to provide seven days notice.

Unite have agreed not to stage the walkout during the Easter period but the negotiations continue.
