Beaches in certain areas of Praslin in the Seychelles have been re-opened following advice that the two shark attacks of 2011 were extremely rare and that the island has long had a reputation for safe swimming.
2011 saw unusual behaviour in shark populations not only in the Seychelles, but in the neighbouring islands of Mauritius and La Reunion.
The Seychelles government sought assistance from Australian life guards, who are now helping Seychelles life guards through a new intense training program.
All the restrictions that were enforced after the twin shark attacks have now been removed. Advisory signs are in place on Praslin beaches and there is a set of safety guidelines in existence to provide advice for swimmers, scuba divers and fishermen.
