Choose your flight neighbour with KLM

Transport 16/12/2011

You never know who you'll end up sitting next to on a flight, which is why KLM will be launching Facebook and Linked In services that will allow passengers to choose the profile of their neighbour onboard.

The service, coined 'meet and seat', will be launched next year but the finer details are still being worked out on the drawing board. The Dutch airline hasn't disclosed whether or not there will be an extra fee for using the scheme.

If the scheme does indeed go ahead, it will provide a great opportunity for networking possibilities for like-minded people - even at the risk of being turned into a sort of online dating agency.

As a poll carried out by a flight comparison website earlier on this year reveals, just under 50 per cent of passengers hope to strike up a lot more than just a friendly exchange when on a flight. The poll, involving 1000 respondents, found that 45 per cent of passengers admitted to flirting during a flight, with a third of respondents saying that the encounter on board led to a rendezvous on land, with eight per cent saying that it led to a fully-blown relationship.

According to an article by transport editor of the Telegraph, another American came to similar conclusions with 29 per cent of respondents admitting that love had struck either on board or at the airport on one occasion. An astonishing 10 per cent confessed that this had happened on more than one occasion, while 3.6 per cent said they could not take a flight without becoming romantically involved with another passenger.
