Christchurch earthquake update

Security 23/03/2011

Despite a recovering well from one of the strongest earthquakes in its history just a few days ago, a state of emergency will remain in place until Wednesday 15th September to ensure that no danger is brought to locals or tourists and to avoid the risk of people being affected by aftershocks. Although there remains the chance of a strong aftershock, of up to a magnitude of 6, as time goes on this becomes decreasingly likely. The city centre cordon, which has been blocking off parts of the city, will be lifted tomorrow, according to a statement on the official New Zealand website.

Although Civil Defence is recommending that people postpone unnecessary travel to the area over the coming week to avoid putting pressure on Christchurch's infrastructure, Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism (CCT) is urging people to continue with their travel plans but to "take notice of any barriers and signs in place for safety purposes". He advises travellers to speak to tourism operators and consult the CCT website if they have concerns.

Alternatively you can call CCT on +64 3 379 9626.
