During a speech yesterday at Madrid Fusion, the international gastronomy extravaganza, Ferran Adrią, owner and head chef of the best restaurant in the world, elBulli, announced that he is to close its doors for two years. At the end of its six-month opening period in 2011, on the restaurant's fiftieth anniversary, the culinary genius will suspend the operation and spend the following two years planning and preparing for a new format to the restaurant to launch in 2014. "I need time to decide how 2014 is going to be," he said. "We want the year 2014 to stand out. I know that when I return it will not be the same." By shutting the restaurant, which is in Roses, not far from Barcelona, he will automatically lose his three Michelin stars.
The restaurant is fully booked for this year and reservations for 2011 open in December. For information on the restaurant's website.
