Eurostar cleaners to go on strike

Transport 27/01/2012

Following news of a strike in Belgium which will disrupt Eurostar services this coming Monday (30th January 2012), it has been announced by the Rail Maritime and Transport Union's general secretary, Bob Crow, that workers who clean the Eurostar trains have voted to strike over pay. They had been offered a wage increase, however this was deemed to be not enough and have therefore opted to take industrial action. Mr. Crow commented: "Our members have spoken with one voice on all three of these contracts, and it should be quite clear to OCS and Initial, as well as Eurostar and Network Rail, that the era of poverty pay for cleaners must come to an end. "The offers so far on the table would all amount to a real-terms pay cut and are way below what our low-paid members need to secure a fair and just income, and way below the standard set by the London Living Wage.
